Welcome to my explanation on how I make Automata for SimCity 4

Warning!  this section is not finished!
This section is filled with dead links and incomplete ideas.
It will hopefully be finished soon.

This is how I make my automata sets.  This is for those of you who have a basic understanding of modding and modeling in 3d please understand that there are perhaps 5 to 10 different ways to go about doing any step in the process, this is just my way...

     Files
- Where you can download useful examples to use as templates for your automata work.

part 1 - Texture work

Programs recommended::
The windows paint program - or another good graphics program
Milkshape 3d                          - the only one you will need to pay for
Irfanview                                  - there are other graphics programs that can do the same thing
fshtool or fshman                   - A good tutorial on using the texture editor in Milkshape 3D HERE.

Below are some links to the tools needed to create my SC4 automata.

3D modeling

Link

Eovia Carrara 3 Studio
Don't be scared.  This is the 3D modeling program that I use and therefore will show you what I do with it to make my creations.  If you have 3D modeling experience I'm sure you can use the program you are comfortable with.

Milkshape 3D
A great little 3D modeling program that I use mostly for texture work.  If you intend to get serious with this you may want to consider buying a copy.  Fortunately it is a bargain.

3D Exploration
*EDIT- 06/17/06 -  I have found that exporting files from Carrara Studio 3 in the .obj format will allow you to import to any program that imports .obj files like Milkshape 3d.  Therefore this program is not as necessary now.

This is an amazingly expensive program.  I only use trial version which is a pain to work with but much easier on the wallet.  If you do any 3D modeling with Carrara 3, then you need this.  Also you may want to run your models through this program anyway before switching programs.  This does tend to smooth the transition. I recommend version 1.5.30

Graphics programs Link
IrfanView
A nice graphic editing program that I use for a certain chore while making my cars.  Its free so give it a try.

Windows Paint program
What can I say.  I like the windows paint program.  If you don't have this program you don't have windows.  I'm sure most non windows OSs have a capable graphics program.

No need

Adobe Illustrator version 8 or newer
A program I use for the 3D modeling with Carrara 3.  Not a necessary program.  Only if you really want to do everything I do to make a 3D model of a car.  I bought my copy of Illustrator for about $70.  I forgot where I found this price.  After doing a search, here are the best prices I have found.
Adobe Illustrator CS 11.0 (26001360 bundle) for PC
Adobe Software 90% Off
Acasup
FSH file editing and converting

fshtool
A nice little tool to convert .fsh files to .bmp files and back again.  Unfortunately this program did not seem to work with Microsoft's service pack 2.  I like using this program so much I decided to loose the service pack and keep fshtool.

FiSHman Beta v 0.2.0
The other program you can use to convert FSH files.  If you have Microsoft's service pack 2, it may be the program you need to use.

 FiSHMan Beta, v0.2.0

iLive - Reader 0.9.3
My favorite Modding tool.  A must have to follow along on the tutorial.

iLive - Reader 0.9.3

DatGen v0.6.0b - COMPLETE
Another very good modding tool.  Not needed for the tutorial but if you intend to really get into modding you will want it eventually.
